GLOBAL MARCH
Website:
Every year, hundreds of cities across the world march to create global awareness about the crisis facing elephants, rhinos and all endangered wildlife and lobby states to take actions to remedy the crisis facing the endangered species. The Global March for Elephants and Rhinos (GMFER) is a worldwide call to action to condemn the poaching of elephants, rhinos and the trafficking of wildlife trophies. This global movement calls upon governments, the civil society, grass root communities and all stakeholders to be proactive and collaborative in order to ensure the survival of elephants and rhinos. Over time the march has also shed light on other endangered species including lions and now pangolins as well as other species being proposed for listings in CITES Appendices I & II. The future of these keystone species is at stake due to burgeoning human population growth and clearance of natural habitats for the establishment of settlements, both in rural and urban areas; and construction of infrastructure and industrial installations. The demand for ivory, rhino horn, pangolin scales and other wildlife products in the Asian market continues to be a growing concern and threatens the existence of these endangered species. This year, marches will be held in over 100 cities with the Nairobi march historically drawing some of the largest numbers of participants. WildlifeDirect will be partnering again with World Leaders of Today (formerly SUSO) and the Kenya Wildlife Service to encourage citizens to take a loud and vocal stand for animals. Last year, people from all walks of life, including children and youth from across the country showed up and walked, despite the scorching heat, for 15 kilometres to Kenya Wildlife Service headquarters. START POINT: National Museums of Kenya, Nairobi END POINT: Kenya Wildlife Service HQ

HOG CHARGE 2019
Website: rhinocharge.co.ke/related-events/?tab=Hog
The Hog Charge was the brainchild of Andrew Coates from Peponi School, Trevor Cussans from Kenton College, Ian Mayo and Mark Tilbury. The basis of the idea was to raise funds for the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust, via an entry of the Hog Charge Team (Car 35) into the Rhino Charge. The idea was to hold a mountain bike event and base it loosely on the annual 4 x 4 vehicle Rhino Charge. The event was aimed at school children to get them actively involved in Conservation fund raising and in so doing, they would learn about the efforts to conserve the forests of Kenya, how to inter-react with sponsors, learn team work and also give them a Challenge when they took part in the event. Parents and teachers are also encouraged to take part. The first Hog Charge was held in 1999 and attracted around 40 teams and was Kenya’s first mountain bike competition. It remains the only such competition for school-children. The Hog Charge is held usually on the last weekend of January on Sukari Ranch on the Thika Road; an extensive area of open bush that is the home to Brookside Dairies and Peponi School, who also co-sponsor the event. In the 2015 Hog Charge event, 104 teams raised the magnificent total of just over KShs 3.4 million. Over the years, the Hog Charge has raised over KShs 37 million for the Rhino Ark and has been awarded the 2nd. or 3rd. Highest Sponsorship trophy at the Rhino Charge many times.
